Forza Horizon 6 How to Drift: Assists, Cars and Tune

On this page

Which settings do you need to change?

Assists are the first barrier. Games.gg and VPEsports both recommend turning off traction control, which kills a slide immediately, stability control, which stops you holding big angles, and assisted steering, which fights the counter-steer you need. Guides split on ABS: one says turning it off gives sharper weight transfer, the other suggests leaving it on while you learn.

Switch to manual shifting so you choose the gear. Most guides suggest practising in third gear until throttle control clicks, and Manual with Clutch unlocks the clutch kick. Dot Esports' controller guide covers where the clutch sits on a pad; see the controller settings page.

How do you start and hold a drift?

  1. Clutch kick: approach the corner off the throttle, then press the throttle hard and quickly press and release the clutch. This works best for lower-power cars in tight, slow corners.
  2. Handbrake entry: approach in second or third gear, turn in, and tap the handbrake as the car begins to rotate.
  3. Hold the slide with the throttle: more throttle increases the angle, less lets the car straighten.
  4. Counter-steer: on gentle curves a small opposite input is enough; on sharp corners you may steer into the turn and add a touch of handbrake.
  5. If the car spins, add rear grip or reduce power. If it will not slide, reduce rear grip or add power.

What are the best drift cars?

Front-engine, rear-wheel-drive cars are the standard choice. One guide notes that AWD builds do not count toward Drift Zone scores; another says front-engine AWD cars can drift but hide mistakes. Either way, learning in RWD is the advice.

What is a good starting drift tune?

These are starting values from community drift guides, not fixed rules. Change one value at a time and test on the same corner. A share code from a proven drifter is quicker; the tuning calculator guide explains how to download one.

  • Upgrades: drivetrain first, with the best clutch and driveshaft. A four-speed drift gearbox is easier to tune.
  • Power: guides aim for roughly 800 to 1,000 Nm of torque; one S13 build targets about 2,300 lb and around 750 hp.
  • Tyre pressure: about 28 PSI front, 26 PSI rear.
  • Gearing: third gear topping out around 120 to 140 mph.
  • Alignment: front camber -3.5° to -5.0°, rear camber -1.5° to -2.0°, front toe out +1.0°, rear toe -2.0°, caster at maximum (+7.0°).
  • Suspension: soft anti-roll bars (around 8), springs around 400 and damping around 4.
  • Brake balance: about 70% to the front.
  • Tyre width: none of the drift guides we checked give a fixed width for drifting, so treat it as part of the test-and-adjust loop above.

Where should you practise?

Drift Zones on the map score each run, and the Horizon Drift online mode uses dedicated circuits. Series 6 added the Edamame Circuit to Horizon Drift for every PI class, per Forza.net. The October 5 release notes also stopped players building Drift Attack score through fast travel and rewinds, so clean runs are now the only way to post a big number.

Drifting also earns skill points quickly, which turn into Wheelspins; the money farm guide explains the link.

Drifting with a wheel

Wheel users who find the car hard to catch should check force feedback before blaming the tune. KeenGamer's wheel guide suggests lowering Force Feedback Scale, Road Feel and Off-Road Feel if the wheel feels too heavy or jerky on dirt, and setting rotation in your wheel software rather than in the game. The Logitech G29 settings guide has starting values.
