Forza Horizon 6 Gaming Services Error: Invalid Fix

On this page

Why does Forza Horizon 6 say Invalid Gaming Services Detected?

Gaming Services is a Windows component that Xbox games on PC use for sign-in, saves and installs. Forza Horizon 6 needs version 36.113.2002 or newer, according to fix guides citing Forza Support. If your version is older, or the service is corrupted, the game shows the error and refuses to start.

Steam players are not exempt. Even though you bought it on Steam, the game connects through Microsoft's services, so the Steam version needs a working Gaming Services install too. When the error appears, the in-game menu stops responding; close the game with Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc).

Fix 1: update Gaming Services

  1. Open the Microsoft Store app.
  2. Go to Downloads (the Library on some versions) and click Get updates.
  3. Install any Gaming Services update listed.
  4. If Gaming Services' Store page only shows Open or Installed, it is already current; move on to Fix 2.
  5. Restart the PC and launch Forza Horizon 6 again.

Fix 2: repair or reinstall Gaming Services

  1. Open Settings, Apps, Installed apps, and find Gaming Services.
  2. Click the three dots, then Advanced options, then Repair. Test the game.
  3. If it still fails, return to Advanced options and choose Uninstall.
  4. Restart the PC before reinstalling. Reinstalling without a restart can leave the new install as broken as the old one.
  5. Install Gaming Services again from the official Microsoft Store listing.

Fix 3: remove Gaming Services for all users

If the normal uninstall does not clear it, a Microsoft Q&A answer suggests removing the package for all users from an administrator PowerShell window, clearing the Store cache, and reinstalling.

  1. Right-click Start and open Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
  2. Run: Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.GamingServices -AllUsers | Remove-AppxPackage -AllUsers
  3. Press Windows + R, type wsreset.exe and press Enter to clear the Store cache.
  4. Restart, then reinstall Gaming Services from the Microsoft Store.

Is there an official repair tool?

Yes. Microsoft offers a Gaming Services Repair Tool. When run, it opens a command prompt, checks your system and installs any Gaming Services updates it needs. Use it if the manual steps above do not work.

Still not launching?

  • Check that Windows is on 22H2 (build 19045) or later, the game's minimum OS.
  • Make sure the Xbox app can sign you in; a broken sign-in can look like a Gaming Services fault.
  • Move on to drivers and overlays in the black screen guide.
  • Before reinstalling anything large, back up your local save cache; the save file guide shows where it is. Your main save is in the cloud.

What if it comes back after a game update?

Run the Store update in Fix 1 again before trying anything else, since a newer game build may expect a newer Gaming Services release. The update page lists recent game versions so you can confirm you are on the latest build.
